A Royal Heritage

Through the centuries the sport of wrestling has received Royal patronage.
Henry VIII is said to have been a fine wrestler, and momentarily got to grips with Francis I of France.
Wrestling was a popular pastime at court until James I came to the throne in the seventeenth century.
In the twentieth century His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh continued Royal interest in our sport by attending tournaments at the Royal Albert Hall.
Other members of the Royal family, particularly HRH Queen Elizabeth, the Queens Mother, are reputed to have been avid television fans.
Now in the first decade of the twenty-first century the Royal baton has been picked up once more.
One of the many highlights of the first year's activity of The Wrestling Heritage site has been contact with Buckingham Palace relating to HRH Prince Philip's visits to the Royal Albert Hall bills in the sixties.
Not only were we pleased to hear from the Duke of Edinburgh, but he was pleased to hear from us. We attach a suitably edited snippet from the very beginning of our correspondence.
